Brief 3 Music Band Intention Statement Coursework

Intention Statement
The first Research I did was to look at Record Labels and especially Indie Rock Labels. What I found out from this observation was that most Indie Record Labels do not have the money to cater for a specific genre of music for an artist, thus generally they are open to more than one type of music genre. Therefore by considering this I have decided to combine both Rock and a little bit of R&B genre on my music Band, to make it more attractable and diverse to more audiences but also follow the conventional way of how Indie Record Companies select and promote their artists.

Furthermore when researching leaflet and how I was going to promote it on print platforms, what I gathered from my research was that the dark and dull colours were mostly aimed at the male audiences whilst the bright colours were typically aimed largely at the female audiences. In order to attract both male and female fans and a larger audiences, I have decided to combine bright and dull colours together on my leaflet during the production, thus by doing this on my production of a leaflet it will allow it to contain the same element of a Rock genre but the addition of bright colours as well to add the R&B element on top of it.

When researching qualities of a Rock Band, their life-style was easy going and relaxed. There were the occasional stereotypical features of a Rock Band such as wearing a black Jacket and having a long hair, nonetheless researching McFly on a TV interview things associated with a Rock Band had evolved. They were funny, dressed casually and respectable to the host during their discourse with him, this was done not to only appeal to the Rock genre audiences but also people who prefer a different type of genre, such as R&B and see the qualities of an R&B singer in them. From this observation I have decided to implement the same thing on my Rock Band to also attract a diverse audience but also to keep the Rock qualities in it to make it recognisable by people.

What I found out from researching album covers was, it was typical album covers portrayed the band members in the studio. This connotes the Band members as being dedicated in what they do but also to make it easy and identifiable as a Rock album. The placement of them was the Band leader was always at the front whilst the rest were all at the back standing as equals. I will use this in my production and make it work by having a band leader, this will appeal to the audience because it makes them see the band leader as the best thus his music has to be good as well, but look up to him as a role model to the audience to try and be like him/her as they stands out.

Moreover when looking at promotional videos, the Band members had a professional time when they were hard at working, but also had a leisure time as well. I will incorporate this in the production of my Rock Band, as predominately the target audience are teenagers thus to make my production video work, I will let them act normal and freely like any other teenager to appeal to them and allow teenagers to associate with them.

My mums new Boyfriend Analysis

1: Media Forms: How does the trailer use media language to estabilsh the film's genre

The Voice Over within the film “My mums new Boyfriend” follows a conventional code in filmmaking that are often seen in comedy genre films. The purpose of this is to set the story ark of the film for us the audience, thus we can easily understand their situation. The first response we the audience assume is that there will be something amusing done by one of the characters. The Voice Over, which is a non-dietetic technique, establishes the film as personal and realistic making it seem like it’s a joke being told from the perspective of someone we know.
The music in the opening scene follows most comedy convention, its anticipating and follows an upbeat tone as we wait to see what stupid thing one of the characters will do. It opens with an upbeat rhythm making it joyful and amusing. This convention is typical in comedic genre films because it reinforces the narrative by making it funny. The music looses the audience and allows them to expect a funny scene, which could occur any moment.

2: Media Representations: How is 'The Family' represented in this trailer

Family is portrayed in a typical mundane realism. Often used phrases within a family such as “your dad would have been proud of you” are used to show that the mother and son still closely think about the father and that he was very dear to them. The fact this is said shows that the family had suffered badly within the death of the father, and perhaps we can make the assumption that this greatly affected the mother by causing her obesity. The representation of family in the film are given a realistic narrative that are mostly common in society, it shows the family must have really suffered by the absence of the dad.
The family is also portrayed to be closed knitted as the son whose in his 20s and an FBI agent still lives with his parent.
The characterisation within the film is also a typical comedy film convention. The element of a big character portrayed as dumb and foolish is stereotypical. The aim is to achieve the audience laughter by putting the character in a funny situation, this is exemplified when the mum trips and falls over.

3: Media Institutions: What Hollywood values can you identify in this trailer

It's notable to realise from the first scene that Hollywood values are embedding in the movie. The opening scene contains “A list” Hollywood celebrities who are well known for iconic and exceptional movies. Hollywood celebrity Antonio Banderas are typical in Hollywood blockbusters to easily grab the attention of the audience and help with the film promotion.
Moreover special effects are predominant in Hollywood values and are recognisable throughout the film. Car stunts and high adrenaline gun shot out are visible in the scene, the aim to quickly put the audience at the edge of their seat and serve as antidote for escapism whereby they can imagine their selves within the movie and take their mind off mundane society. Also Hollywood movies generally tend to have big budget therefore their values with having big budget means there are usually big and groundbreaking stunt within the movie.

4: Media Audiences: In what ways does the trailer promote the film to its target audience?

The film uses a variety of techniques to promote the film to it target audience. Most of the characters are in their 30s and the film narrative is aimed at and adult genre. They use celebrities such as Antonio to grab the attentions of adults who know him from his previous movies. He's unlike young film actors such as Orlando Bloom, the film chooses veteran Hollywood characters to easily attain the attention of the audience, but also astonish the audience them and gain their interest as they would be happy to see a return of him and what he might do next.
Also special effects in the movies help promote the film to its target audience. Fast paced special effect such as car stunt easily grab the attention of young adult. Most men in today’s modern world have a boring routine of going to work and then home, high tech gadget gives the target audience freedom, something dramatic and exhilarating. Young adult are more likely to be bought in by the film as they would like to watch the film to see the full action and hat will happen next in the movie.

Portrayal of family in Brick Lane

The portrayal of Family in Brick Lane by Monica Ali follows a mundane realism of family in the 20th Century. The movie explores the concept of nuclear family and the tensions it brings within it. The film uses the gratification of informing to show us the dysfunction between the father (Chanu) and daughter (Shahna). This is made vivid in the early scenes when the father and daughter have an augments and she says “she didn’t ask to be born.” The conflict between a father and daughter is very common in today’s modern family. It is mostly a clash between two cultures whereby the father expects the daughter to follow tradition however the daughter rather preferring to follow modern change in society. The film tells us family in today’s modern age has changed a lot and there is a clash of culture between the young generation and old generation.
Moreover the movies portrayal of father in Brick Lane is a true reflection of most fathers in today’s present day. With the economy in deep uncertainties the movie depicts this carefully well when the father has a breakdown and tells the family “do you know how much I struggle to get food on the table”. The film illustrates the term family to be a beautiful concept however also filled with struggle and hardship. It shows family can be a daily struggle for the man of the house, having to work and earn money in order to keep the family going.  Brick Lane although fiction reflects society accurately to an extent it portrays family in the film to be filled with many barriers and struggles which is inevitable.
The movie combines element of traditional family codes and modern family behaviours. Where as Nazneen the protagonist is a housewife her portrayal follows a more traditional ideology. It combines and blends it with modern behaviour of women to be more independent by having a day job ( Sowing trousers).  The film presents Nazneen to be independent and more liberated by taking care of her own welfare state not waiting and relying on her husband. The film shows us that the idea of family is changing constantly and women within a family are not just accepting the supposed norm, however challenging it, as shown by Nazneen in the film when she smiles when she finally managed to get a sowing machine in her house.

Research:

Film Overwiew

1.
·         Someone with an idea for a film presents it to a studio or investors

·         They decide on whether to purchase rights towards the film before starting production

·         Screenwriters, directors and casts are brought in to make the film

·         When finished and sent back to studio they make a licensing agreement with a distribution company

·         Distributers decide number of copies to make and show a screening of the film to cinema representatives.

·          The buyers negotiate with the distribution company on the film lease and the terms of agreement

·         Film sent to cinema and showed for a specific amount of days

·         The print sent back to distributer and payment made on the lease

2. Film Distribution is the process in which a film is distributed to the audience or public to watch. This is than by a film distributer and mostly accomplished by realising it on cinema, DVD or on television programmes.

3. Hollywood studio system in the 1930's and 40's were a process whereby people were recruited into the industry to become trained crew members and stars. The studio controlled the distribution, production and exhibition of the film. It meant that if cinemas wanted to book a featured film, they had to book other films from the studio as well. This led to massive profit for the industry, however became harder for independent films to generate money.                                                                                        The Hollywood studio system was a tightly controlled system which generated massive profit. It also meant risk where minimises which people loved and came to expect.

4. Film production has changed and is very different from today. Big studios such as Universal are renting their equipment to independent directors rather than having full control over the production of the film. With the collapse of studios it meant producers no longer had power over creative film making.

·         Film Distribution has changed today as people can easily get films from most major stores. It is easy and accessible to view a film. It can be viewed on the Internet, Video Games and even watch it easily on smart phones.

·         Whereas movies used to be advertised on Bill Boards and just TV, nowadays it’s being exhibited on Radios, Internet, advertisement in the cinema and films stars promoting the film.

5. Vertical Integration

Vertical integration is the merging together of two businesses that are at different stages of production

An example would be studios having the control of production, exhibition and distribution.

Another example would be two supermarkets merging together

Horizontal Integration

Horizontal integration is when a company expands its business into different products that are similar to current lines
A hot dog vendor expanding into selling hamburgers would be an example of horizontal integration
You Tube, which was taken over my Google primarily because it had a strong and loyal user base.
